An academic awards presentation was held on Tuesday, March 16th at the Harlan County Board of Education prior to the regular monthly board meeting.
Awards were presented for academic leadership, attainment of established district benchmarks, as well as recognition for the attainment of Adequate Yearly Progress in regard to NCLB.

Six individual academic plaques will be presented in subject areas that recorded an academic index over 100:
Cawood          Elem. Science 106.3
Green Hills       Elem. Science 106.67
Rosspoint         Elem. Reading 100.78
                        Middle School SS 101.87
Wallins             Elem. Science 111.36,
                        Middle School Science 109.99

Five schools were presented plaques acknowledging the “whole school” effort required to attain the designation of making “adequate yearly progress” in regard to NCLB.
These five schools are Cawood Elementary, Green Hills Elementary, James A. Cawood Elementary, Rosspoint Elementary, and Wallins Elementary.
The District Academic Leadership award was presented to both Rosspoint Elementary as well as Wallins Elementary.

*In the past, the Academic Leadership Award has been presented to the school with the highest accountability index score.  Due to the states transition in the assessment process, Accountability Index scores were not calculated by the Kentucky Department of Education.   An independent group, the Kentucky Association of School Councils developed a weighted formula and calculated an overall academic index for all Kentucky schools which gave Rosspoint the highest overall district academic index; however, KDE recommended that an equally weighted scale be used if districts wished to calculate an overall academic index for their schools.  Using the equally weighted formula Wallins Elementary posted the highest academic index.  District leadership feels it is appropriate to acknowledge both of these outstanding schools.
